Class Focus & Objectives
Key Stage 3 (Years 7-9)
During these sessions, we will focus on the vocabulary and grammatical structures that the students are studying at school. Thereby practicing and reinforcing relevant subject matter and encouraging academic success.
The aim of the classes is to build the students’ confidence, skill, and appreciation of the language whilst developing effective study skills and a strong linguistic base.
For many native English speakers, the most difficult aspect of learning a foreign language such as Spanish, is getting to grips with the verb conjugations and verb tenses. As a beginner, trying to remember so many different patterns and structures can be overwhelming and demotivating. Therefore, I try to simplify this process as much as possible and encourage the students to tackle the challenge in a methodical way.
Key Stage 4 (Years 10-11)
For older students, the class objectives will be a natural development of aims discussed above but with a stronger focus on exam preparation and achieving academic success.
Study Materials & Resources
In general, we will use the materials that the students are given at school, however, I may also recommend buying additional resources such as the book and vocab cards below.
Before, buying extra resources, it’s important to know which EXAM BOARD your school follows and ensure that you are buying the latest edition (for example, the resouces below are designed for the new Spanish GCSE exam for 2026 and beyond). Once I’ve seen the resources you have from school, I can advise you on buying additional materials if necessary.
All students will be required to buy a copy of the Structured Notebook for Spanish Vocabulary (7.50 GBP) & the Structured Notebook for Spanish Verbs (7.50 GBP) that I have created to help students develop effective study skills (I will add a link to the latest editions here when they are published at the end of September 2025).
Websites such as BBC Bitesize Spanish are also very useful resources.
Example Recommended Resources:
The Structure of a Typical Class
Introduction (English & Spanish):
Brief warm up to relax the students, find out what they’ve been working on in their Spanish classes at school. Check if they have any specific questions or tasks they would like to work on during the session (homework/exam prep etc).
Class Activities (mainly Spanish, English if needed to clarify something):
Activities using the students’ materials from school and any additional resources that are relevant to the vocabulary or grammar structure that we are focussing on.
In general, we will practice the target language through speaking, listening, or reading aloud to practice comprehension/pronunciation and answering questions about what the students have read/heard. We will not normally do written exercises, unless the students need/want to practice a certain activity for their schoolwork.
For older students who are preparing for exams, we may focus more on developing the knowledge and skills they need via written or book-based activities if/when appropriate.
Class Conclusion:
Recap the main points of the session, discuss any follow up activities, for example, adding new vocabulary and verb conjugations to their Structured Notebooks. Discuss objectives/topics/activities for the following session. Apart from writing up and organizing notes when necessary, the students will not be given homework.
